Listed below are the 9 most important questions in hiring ANY DJ service for your special event. We have also provided a comprehensive list of more than 40 questions to ask when interviewing a disc jockey. Some may be things you never thought of while others may simply not apply to your event.

It is our goal for our clients to make the most informed decison on their entertainment needs for their event.

What is the disc jockey's experience?

  • How many years in business?
  • How many parties per year and how many of them are receptions?
  • When dealing with a multiple DJ company, who will be my actual disc jockey?
  • Can I meet them in advance? How long have they been with your company? Remember, you want someone that is an expert.

What type of personality can I expect from the disc jockey?

  • You want someone fun, but not offensive, outgoing, but not obnoxious, professional, but not a stick in the mud. Someone that can take command of the room and make sure everything is running smoothly.
  • You want someone that will go "above and beyond" their duties to make the event exactly how you want it. This is the most important aspect in hiring a disc jockey.

Do you have any references?

  • The real key to finding a great DJ is repeat business and word of mouth advertising. Have you or your friends seen the DJ actually perform? Have you, your friends, relatives, or co-workers heard comments about the DJ's performance?
  • What's their reputation? Do they belong to any local or national associations?
  • Ask other local wedding vendors if they have worked with the DJ and what were their thoughts.
  • Ask the DJ if they could provide 3 letters of reference or personal contacts to verify the work that they do. If it sounds too good to be true, make sure they can back up what they are saying with quality references.

What type of pre-reception planning do you offer?

  • In most cases, the DJ is the one coordinating the entire reception. It is crucial that the DJ offers some type of planning materials including a song list, order of events, announcements, and bridal party listing.
Fail to plan… Plan to Fail!

What kind of music will the disc jockey play?

  • A wide variety of music is the key, being that we have a wide variety of ages and groups of people. All the music should be "family friendly."
  • The music library should contain everything from the 40's to today's hits. The disc jockey should also be willing to take input on the bride and groom's personal preference for the style of music to be played.
  • Requests from your guests should also be allowed the day of the event at the disc jockey's discretion.
  • A good variety of music is the foundation for a fun and memorable evening.

Do you have a contract for me to sign?

  • The importance of getting a written contract from your DJ (or any wedding vendor) cannot be overemphasized.
  • Most DJ related horror stories are due to either ,"the DJ was a friend" or "no written contract".Why chance the DJ not showing up or canceling at the last minute?A good contract will protect you from this nightmare.
  • Make sure you review the contract carefully and understand all of the fine print.

How will the disc jockey dress?

  • For formal receptions, a tuxedo is pretty standard. For informal events attire can be discussed to fit the event.
  • Appearance is also important. You want some one that is neat, clean and well groomed. Ask to see a current picture of the DJ. How your DJ presents themselves, will reflect on their performance.

What type of equipment will the disc jockey use?

  • Make sure the equipment is "professional grade." Home stereo components are not designed for heavy road use and abuse.
  • Does the disc jockey regularly update and maintain their equipment? We recommend that any professional disc jockey should also have back-up components available immediately in case of any failures or disasters.

How much do you charge?

  • Traditionally this is the first question a prospective client asks. We have placed it last because ANY disc jockey should meet your requirements to the above questions FIRST, before even comparing other services on price. You will also be able to prioritize your requirements of each disc jockey and find out what is really important to you.
  • Is the price a GOOD VALUE to the services that they offer? There are bargain basement services and companies where you really get your monies worth.
  • Keep your budget in mind as well, but will saving $100 or $200 have a dramatic affect on the type and quality of disc jockey you can hire and is that really worth it?
